More from our Bridgeport Public School Partners:
Bridgeport Public Schools is proud to have strengthened our relationship with Project Future. We are excited to expand coding opportunities, with the help of Sacred Heart University and Code.org, to all 20,000+ learners in our school system. Superintendent Michael Testani has continually supported this partnership and is seeking to expand Computer Science opportunities to all learners.
Having been isolated with remote learning and COVID in general, I’m hoping we can all enjoy being part of something bigger. I wanted to share with you the exciting news that on Friday, December 11th, beginning at 9:30 AM, we will collectively be partaking in the largest Hour-of-Code event in the state! All students in Bridgeport Public Schools will be engaging in computer science education by participating in the “Hour of Code” event hosted on Code.org. Thank you to Mr. Testani and his central office staff for all the support in this endeavor!
Beyond the district-wide Hour of Code, below are a few examples of additional computer science engagement opportunities for Bridgeport students and teachers during the upcoming CS Ed Week.
Discovery Magnet – Our inter-district elementary school (PreK – 8) has a STEM theme and focus and is very excited to embrace CS Ed week once again. A quick note from Principal Bella stated: “Last year, we wanted to involve parents and had offered an evening event for parents to join their child to come and code together. The event was a huge success! Using Code.org there are over 110 new tutorials and programs teachers and students can pick from. Code.org has another program called CodeBytes we are also introducing teachers to this year. This year, CodeBytes is offering live thematic webinars geared towards specific grade levels"
Park City Magnet – Our intra-district STEM-themed magnet school is planning a Family Code Night to engage their parents as well. They are also assigning each student to a course on code.org to be tackled during the CS Ed week.
Wilbur Cross School – A computer science club is starting this school year for the first time, and long-term plans to infuse computer science lessons into the schedule of each student through the library media center are in the works. CS Ed week will be a ‘springboard’ for their club and lessons.
Fairchild Wheeler IT – Our inter-district magnet high school with a software engineering and information technology focus is very excited for CS Ed week. Their plans include an hour of code each day for each student, with the coding tied directly to the courses they are taking – a true infusion of CS into education!
We are very excited to be working with Project Future and all their partners to support Computer Science education for all students within Bridgeport Public Schools.
Respectfully,
Dave J. Henry
